A very special On Display!

We have rolled out the red carpet, literally, for our big 10th year anniversary window! We are so excited to show you some couture pieces from our personal collection. So if you’re coming this Saturday to our party (from 10-5) you will get an exclusive peek at 2 never before exhibited gowns which showcase fashion’s golden era. And if you can’t make it on Saturday, then please click to view the image below, we promise you won’t regret it!  We have entitled this window ‘Possible Conversations’.

The left couture gown is by the “Master”, Cristobal Balenciaga. It is constructed with a cream silk jacquard fabric featuring a chrysanthemum design and long crystal bead fringe sleeves.  This piece hails from the winter 1961 collection and is documented in the fashion memoir ‘Balenciaga’ by Marie-Andrée Jouve.

The right gown is a 1952 Christian Dior couture gown. (It has thin straps but is short in the torso so we tucked them in for display) It is made of a cream cotton organza and encrusted with gold beaded ‘bursts’. Tiny cotton flowers and prong set crystals are also hand applied throughout. Truly a dream!

One should always keep people guessing, espescially when it comes to fashion. We love mixing up vintage with new for that unique look. It defines oneself amongst a sea of predictable. So this week,  we have all new contemporary luxury designer dresses paired with vintage accessories. The silk Alberta Ferretti on the left is about a size 4 and is shown with a vintage crystal belt and necklace. The wool tweed Dior in the centre (sold)is a size 4-6 and has been decorated with a vintage Chanel camellia brooch. The hand crochet silk Oscar on the right is a size 10-12 and is belted with a deco jet flapper strand (can be used as a necklace as well).

Chanel by Lesage

Maison Lesage has been creating dream inducing embroideries, tweeds and beadwork since the 1920’s. Worth, Paquin, Vionnet, Schiaparelli, Chanel, LaCroix, Dior, Valentino and YSL are just a few of the many designers who have gone to Lesage for their magical touch. In 2002 Chanel bought Lesage but supposedly it remains an independent atelier and still produces for other fashion houses (conflict of interest much?). They employ about 100 workers, or ‘petite main’ as they call them, who work arduously to accommodate to the hectic fashion season schedules.  Each couture piece can take a petite main up to 100 hours to complete. If you have ever attempted beading or any hand stitch work you can appreciate how much patience and passion these workers have. Not to mention the inevitable back pain, all for the sake of beauty!

We were tickled pink when we received in this confection of a Chanel tweed suit by said Lesage. It’s marked a size 42 and is 10 years old (05P), but looks as new as the day she came off the loom. Please contact us for more details. Sold

Need to complete the look? We also have this ssssstunning Dior python clutch with optional chain ssssstrap ↓

Measures 10½” x 2″ x 5″. Sold

We’ve had quite the injection of new merchandise over the last week and this display is just a sampling of what’s now in store. How chic is that centre gown? We are absolutely in love with it,  and this may be because it’s a vintage DIOR from the early 1950’s!!!  It’s about a size 2-4 and would be a coveted addition to any collection. The 1960’s ruffled cocktail number to the left is a size 2, as is the dress on the right.

We’ve gotten in some incredible black tie appropriate gowns as of late. These frocks really come alive as soon as they are put on. We love how dark and vampy they are! The left is none other than Dior and is a bias cut silk chiffon so it’s a general size small. The centre trained silk satin gown is a size 4 and is attributed to Vera Wang sold. On the right is silk brocade Nina Ricci and is a size 2.

Out and About

We have recently received a follow up email from Lisa Eisen. You may remember when we first heard from Lisa in December of 2013, as posted here>. Now we have a great shot from her sister-in-laws big day. The bride wore a stunningly flawless 1960’s Christian Dior Couture dress. Lisa also writes;

Hey to all the staff at The Cat’s Meow,
Just wanted to send you an update, a year later, from my brother’s wedding.  Last January my sister-in-law and I went shopping in your store.  Literally a half hour later we walked out with her absolutely perfect wedding dress.  With minimal alterations, she and my brother finally tied the knot in a New Years Eve celebration.  Gorgeous wedding, gorgeous gown, gorgeous bride, wonderful sister-in-law…how did we all get so lucky?!
Thanks again for all of your help and for your fabulous stock of dresses.  I’m always recommending you guys for anyone looking for something specific for any sort of event.  Love your store!  I’ve attached a picture of the blushing bride.

Back to black and we are super excited about the dress (sold)on the right…. She hails from the early 1960’s and is one of the first creations from the house of MISSONI!!! And, and, and it’s brand new with it’s original tags! (Totally geeked out over this peice when it arrived.) We feel so blessed that the vintage gods have rewarded us with one of their holy angels. We should also note the 1970’s Dior couture velvet jacket  (sold) in the middle- lined in silk and serial numbered.

This is our anarchistic pattern mash-up of a window. Somehow we find fluidity to it- like mixing sweet with salty. Consider it the visual version of a sea salted caramel bon bon. Surprisingly delightful, isn’t it?
